The name “Pahrump” actually comes from the Southern Paiute word pah-rimpi, which
means “Water Rock.” Early settlers gave it that name because the valley was once full of
natural artesian wells bubbling up from underground. That’s why, despite being in the
desert, Pahrump used to be dotted with lush cottonwood trees and even had water
owing on the surface!
